Herschel Fall is largely a self-taught artist. From an early age, growing up poor. Herschel used his art to escape from the trials of the would around him. Teachers and friends encouraged him to show his work and continue to develop his own techniques. After tacking a long break from art after high school. He was encouraged to take up the brush again by his wife. Herschel works in many different mediums from acrylics to oils as well as watercolor’s. I find that oils and acrylics have a nice body to them that makes it easy for blending and shading color’s that works best for my techniques. I start off with a subject or thought that inspires me by putting it on paper in many different sketches. I then decides on the best sketch, then move on to canvas. The medium is based on the subject. It sometimes goes thru many different changes before it is done. I like to work wet on wet as this seems to work best for me as I am blending or shading one area at a time. Inspiration comes from many different areas of life. I would have to say the most rewarding thing about being an artist is to see your work go from start to finished piece. Then signing your name to something that you created also to see the joy that other people get from your work. Being a self taught artist you read as many books as you can get your hands on. For me the two that stands out the most are the bright colors and attention to detail that I put into my work. I would have to say to two artist that have had the greatest impact regarding my work would be Michael Godard and Eric Herrmann. Although my artwork content is not the same as their life story and the hard times they had; but, are close to mine and that is what keeps me motivated. People often ask me what I think about when I am at work with my art. This is a hard thing to answer, as time seems to stand still for me as my art comes to life.
